Here's what Marvel/Sony should and shouldn't do with the next Spider-Man Film

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

SPOILER WARNING FOR SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME.

At the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, the InfoWars version of J. Jonah Jameson revealed Spider-Man's secret identity thanks to footage from a recently-deceased Mysterio. The revelation that Peter Parker is Spider-Man puts him and his loved ones in grave danger. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will most likely have multiple villains gunning for Peter in the next MCU Spider-Man film which could also mean that Peter will have a little help of his own. My idea involves two key allies: one character we've seen before and another that was hinted at in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Donald Glover makes a small appearance as low-level criminal Aaron Davis in Homecoming. During an awkward interrogation from Spider-Man, Davis laments that the neighborhood is unsafe because he has a nephew that lives nearby. His nephew is none other than Miles Morales, the subject of 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The addition of Miles would be terrific as it provides Peter with someone just like him so he doesn't feel alone. Miles's venom strike and camouflage would also be great to see in live-action.

Joining the two Spider-Men in my version of this film would be Harley Keener, the kid from Iron Man 3 who was at Tony Stark's funeral in Avengers: Endgame. Marvel should have a subplot where Tony leaves his gadgets and tech to Harley in his will so that he can take up the mantle of Iron Man. Peter and Harley could bond over their loss of Tony as a father figure. Peter, Miles, and Harley would form a powerful trinity that could defeat the multitude of villains trying to kill Peter Parker.

This probably won't happen, but I am fearful that Sony will meddle too much in future Spider-Man films by trying to shoehorn in characters like Venom and Morbius. Besides the first two Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films, Sony has fumbled the property. Spider-Man 3 is a meme-fest. The Amazing Spider-Man was promising, but a terrible villain and unnecessary origin story ruins the re-watchability factor. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 literally made the same mistakes as Spider-Man 3 by including too many villains and trying to set up other movies resulting in the web-slinger's lowest grossing film. Sony then made its first smart decision in a long time by teaming with Marvel to have Spidey join the MCU. Then, after two extremely successful Tom Holland-led movies, Sony's stupidity returned. Well, kind of.

When discussing renewing their deal, Disney/Marvel wanted a bigger cut of the film's profits. Sony had previously handled everything financially, paying for the film and getting all the profits, while Marvel was in primarily in charge of hiring the cast and crew. Sony had final say on cast and crew, but they'd be stupid not to follow Marvel's creative direction since they want to join their universe.

Disney/Marvel had leverage to make this move and it makes great business sense. They're essentially daring Sony to make Spider-Man movies without Marvel's help because its track record is spotty. However, it really contradicts Kevin Feige proclamations about the movies being "for the fans". We know it's all about money, but don't make it so obvious.

I wasn't a fan of Venom and Morbius doesn't look any better. I don't trust Sony to make a good superhero movie anymore. Just take my advice and have Peter, Miles, and Harley team up and watch the dollars pile up.
